Call for Papers

“Migration and the Global City”

October 29-31, 2010 at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada

Description

Ryerson University is hosting this conference to launch its new Research Institute on Immigration and Settlement (working title). Both the conference and the institute are dedicated to advancing innovative and interdisciplinary research from diverse critical and institutional perspectives in the areas of immigration and settlement, international migration, integration, and diaspora and refugee studies. Moreover, the institute will further the scholarly quest to integrate theory with practice and to shape policy on international migration issues based on values of inclusion and respect for cultural diversity.

The conference connects international and national research networks with Ontario and especially Toronto, one of the world’s most diverse communities. Showcasing Ontario and Toronto as the main immigrant gateways in Canada, the conference will bring together immigration and settlement scholars, graduate students, national, provincial and municipal policy makers, regional non-government agencies and community representatives. By connecting research networks with the local community, the conference will facilitate local capacity building. The 2010 CERIS-Metropolis Student Conference will also be integrated into the wider conference program.

Paper Submission:

A paper presentation is 20 minutes long or less and describes a research project and its findings, or a well-documented theoretical/practical perspective. Audio visual supports can be used. Abstracts of 150 words or less should include the main premise of the paper, a summary of supporting evidence and the conclusion. Please also identify potential conference theme(s)

Special Sessions:

Participants are welcome to organize special sessions. The organizers of special sessions are responsible for collecting all relevant information (i.e. panel title, names of presenters, presentation titles, and presentation abstracts of up to 150 words each).

Roundtable Sessions:

A roundtable session is 90 minutes long and emphasizes discussion, exchange of ideas and/or demonstration of methods of practical relevance. A roundtable session must provide participants with the opportunity to actively participate. The abstract of 150 words or less must include the description of the topic, the goal of the roundtable session, and the names and affiliations of all participants.

Poster:

A poster is an exhibit of research or techniques, activities or methods; it is presented on a display board that includes a title, the name of the presenter, and a brief display of graphics, text, photos, illustrations, summaries, charts, realia, etc. Posters presenting research should outline the research questions, methodology and findings. Presenters must be available for discussion during the time designated for one-on-one discussion. No AV equipment or electrical access is available. Abstracts of 150 words or less should include the main premise of the poster, a summary of supporting evidence and the conclusion. Please also identify potential conference theme(s).

All submissions are subject to peer-review. The conference organizers will contact you in early July and inform you if your abstract/panel has been accepted. All accepted presenters must register by July 31, 2010 (early bird) or risk being removed from the program.
